GEORGE W. WICKERSHAM - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 11/15/1910 . GEORGE W. WICKERSHAM As Attorney General, he solicits a judge's advice on the draft of a speech. Autograph Letter signed: "Geo. W. Wickersham" as Attorney General, 1 page, 5¼x6¾. Washington, D.C. 1910 November 15. On official letterhead to "My dear Judge Hunt", in full: "This is a draft of what I think of saying at the Hughes dinner. I should like to have your criticism. Faithfully yours". George Woodward Wickersham (1858-1936), a prominent corporation lawyer was U.S. Attorney General (1909-1913) under President Taft. He successfully prosecuted many corporations under the Sherman Antitrust Act. In 1929, he was appointed by President Hoover to head the National Commission on Law Observance and Law Enforcement, which came to be called the Wickersham Commission. It concluded in its final report of 1931 that the federal machinery for enforcing criminal law in the United States was inadequate. The Hughes dinner mentioned in the letter was probably in honor of New York Governor and future Presidential candidate and Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, who had just been become (October 10, 1910) an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court. Judge Hunt was probably William Henry Hunt, a federal judge who was soon to be appointed (December 10, 1910) a Justice of the short-lived US Customs Cout. Mailing fold through center.
